Finishing a piece is a quiet, satisfying moment. Fastening off (FO) is the final step that locks your work so it won’t come undone. Whether you’re working in rounds or in rows, you fasten off the same way every time.

How to fasten off (FO)

The heart of it

Fastening off (FO) locks your last stitch so the work can’t unravel - you pull the cut tail through the final loop and snug it into a small knot.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1:

Cut the yarn

Leave at least 6 inches of yarn tail (or whatever your pattern suggests), then cut the yarn from the ball.

Step 2:

One loop on your hook

After your last stitch, you’ll have one loop left on your hook.

Bring the cut tail up and pull it all the way through that loop.

Step 3:

Pull it tight

Keep pulling until the tail comes all the way through and forms a small knot.

That knot keeps your stitches from coming undone.

That’s your work secured.

Once it’s fastened off (FO), your stitches are safe and you’re ready to weave in the tail or sew pieces together.

We’re right here with you every step of the way.
