Sewing your crochet pieces together is how a pile of separate parts becomes one finished make — a beak onto a face, wings onto a body. Take it slowly, one stitch at a time, and you’ll get a neat, secure join.

How to sew crochet pieces together

The heart of it

You’re sewing one stitch on the piece to one stitch on the body, back and forth. Pinning first holds everything still so the join stays even.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1:

Pin it in place

Pin the piece to the body.

Pin the center first, then add more pins around the edge so it stays firmly in place while you sew.

Step 2:

Thread the needle

Thread your yarn onto the yarn needle.

Step 3:

Into the body

Insert the needle into one stitch of the body, lining it up with the next stitch on the piece.

Pull the yarn all the way through.

Step 4:

Up through the piece

Bring the needle up through the next stitch on the piece.

Pull the yarn all the way through.

Step 5:

Work all the way around

Repeat steps 3 and 4 — one stitch of the piece to one stitch of the body — until you reach the last stitch and the piece is fully joined.

Step 6:

Secure and hide the tail

To hide the yarn tail, take the needle down into the next stitch and run it through the body, then pull the yarn through.

Trim the tail close to the surface and gently massage the area so the end disappears inside.

That’s two pieces joined into one.

Sewing is what brings your make to life — every wing, beak, and ear gets added this way.
