An increase (inc) means making two single crochets in the same hole. It adds an extra stitch — and that’s how you shape your project. By increasing (and later decreasing), you create the curves and contours of each amigurumi piece.

How to crochet an increase (inc)

The heart of it

An increase (inc) is just two single crochets in the same spot. Two stitches where there was one — that’s how your work grows wider.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1:

Make one single crochet (sc)

Make a single crochet (sc) by following the single crochet lesson, steps 1–5.

Step 2:

Find the same hole

Find the hole where you just made that stitch - it’s right under the bottom of the vertical “V” you created.

Step 3:

Hook back in

Insert your hook into that same hole again.

Step 4:

Make a second single crochet (sc)

Make another single crochet (sc) in that hole.

You should now see two vertical V’s going into the same hole - and that’s your increase (inc)!

That’s an increase (inc) - two stitches in one spot. Your pattern will tell you exactly where to add them, so you never have to guess.

We’re right here with you every step of the way.
