How to yarn over
The yarn over is one of the first techniques you’ll learn in crochet - and one of the most useful. You’ll use it in almost every stitch, so it’s worth getting comfortable with it from the start.

The heart of it
A yarn over just means catching the working yarn over your hook. Once it’s sitting on the hook, you’re ready for the next part of your stitch.
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1:
Get your hook ready
Make sure your hook tip is facing toward you.
Hold the hook in front of the working yarn — that’s the yarn connected to your ball.
Step 2:
Catch the yarn
Bring your hook from the front, down and under the yarn, then behind it and back up again.
The yarn will catch on the hook.
Step 3:
Check your work
When it’s done right, the yarn rests neatly over your hook.
And that’s your first yarn over!
That's the yarn over — the little move behind almost every stitch you'll make.
We're right here with you every step of the way.
