How to double crochet (dc)

The double crochet (dc) is a taller stitch, built on the single crochet you've already learned. It works up quickly and gives your crochet a soft, open feel. The one new move is a yarn over before you start, then pulling through your loops in two stages.

Yarn over first:

Before you insert your hook, yarn over. Bring the hook down, behind the yarn, and up so the yarn wraps around it.

Hook in:

Find the next stitch (the small V on top) and insert your hook from front to back, under both strands, with the hook tip facing you.

Yarn over and pull through:

Yarn over again, then pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have three loops on your hook.

Pull through the first two:

Yarn over, then pull through the first two loops on your hook. You should now have two loops left.

Step 5

Pull through the last two:

Yarn over again, then pull through the last two loops. You should now have one loop left, and that completes one double crochet (dc)!

That's one double crochet. To make more, yarn over first, find the next V, and repeat. It feels like a lot of steps at first, but the rhythm (yarn over, pull through, pull through) becomes second nature fast. We're right here with you every step of the way.
