When you crochet in rows, you always work in one direction. So each time you reach the end of a row, you turn your work before carrying on. This guide walks you through how.

How to turn your work

Watch the lesson

The heart of it

Turning is just two moves — add a turning chain (ch), then flip the work like a page — so the top edge faces you again, ready for the next row.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1:

Make a turning chain (ch)

At the end of the row, yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook to make one chain (ch).

Step 2:

Turn your work

Flip your piece like turning the page of a book, so the fabric moves to the other side of the loop on your hook.

Your hook is now back at the start, ready to work the next row.

Step 3:

Find the next stitch

Look for the V-shaped stitches along the top edge.

Insert your hook under both top loops of the first stitch and work across the new row.

Step 4:

Keep going

Crochet across the row as your pattern says, then repeat these same steps each time you start a new row.

That’s a turn!

Once you’ve done it a couple of times it becomes second nature, and your rows will start to stack up evenly.

We’re right here with you every step of the way.
